Shamaxi is another site where reliable VTD plant technology is in operation.

At the end of 2007 the VTD service team left for Shamaxi in Azerbaijan to install an ASTA 2400 mirror coating plant.

The town of Shamaxi lies around 150 km from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku on the Caspian Sea. The largest astronomic telescope in the region is located there in the Pirgulu region (North / East Caucasus) at an altitude of roughly 1,500 meters above sea level.

There are five telescope towers of different heights on the premises of the observatory. Two smaller telescopes are used to observe the sun, all others to explore the stars. All of the 30 mirrors which were delivered by the Carl Zeiss company in 1969 are to be provided with new top-quality reflexions with the aid of VTD technology for stripping the old coatings and applying new ones.

Our technicians succeeded in handing over the fully operational plant to the customer in only three weeks. The first coated mirrors were of a top quality and we have already received enquiries from the neighbouring regions.

There are plans to develop the big observatory as a highlight and tourist attraction in this region.
